School district proposes .8-percent property tax hike

The Richfield School Board on Monday night set its proposed tax levy increase -- the amount it will ask property taxpayers for next year -- at just over $134,000, a .8 percent increase over 2011.

The board also set its annual truth-in-taxation public hearing for 7 p.m. Monday, Dec.5, in the board room of the district office.

The amount represents the maximum amount the district can levy. The final tax asking could change, based on a number of factors, before the board sets its final levy amount in December.

The property tax levy is separate from the school funding referendum on Nov. 8 in which the district will ask taxpayers for authority to raise about $2 million a year for 10 years to cover rising expenses and stagnant state support.
