66th Street plan focuses on streetscape upgrades

A plan for redeveloping 66th Street between Cedar and Portland avenues would make the east Richfield business corridor more pedestrian friendly when Hennepin County reconstructs the road in 2015.

The plan prepared by Damon Farber Associates of Minneapolis and approved by the Richfield City Council Tuesday night proposes changing the street configuration from two lanes in each direction to single lanes with a choice of several configurations including a green median in some sections, left-turn and parking lanes, and bike lanes and wider sidewalks in others.

The complete report is available as part of the full agenda on the city's website.

Other highlights of the plan:
- It's a market-driven plan, said Tom Whitlock of Damon Farber, so no public purchase of existing homes and properties is planned.
- A restaurant, possibly a McDonald's, would be added on 66th near Cedar Point Commons.
- A fitness facility such as a YMCA or private gym located near Veterans Park would strengthen the park's recreation appeal.
- Businesses in the central part of the area would expand, quasi-public spaces would become part of redevelopment and higher-density housing would make this part of 66th a better environment for living, working and shopping.
