The city will be talking to neighbors along 63rd Street in the northeast corner of Richfield about converting the street into a greenway between Taft and Veterans parks.
During a special study session Tuesday evening, City Traffic Engineer Jeff Pearson showed City Council members several sketches of a reconfigured streetscape featuring a narrower street with separate bike and walking paths. One sketch showed a full-width street with barriers at intersections that would stop car traffic in the summer but be removed to allow vehicles, including snow plows, in the winter.
At this point, Pearson said, the greenway is a just a concept. City staffers will knock on doors at residences along the street in coming weeks to get reactions to the idea of changing the street.
If they get a positive response, the city could go ahead and start a formal planning process.
